Did you know that gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss and that around 80% of adults in the UK will experience it at some point in their lives?
Gum disease is a common condition where the gums can become swollen and infected. Gum disease can cause bad breath and you may suffer from bleeding gums when brushing. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. Left untreated, gum disease can lead to a condition called periodontitis which affects the tissues that support teeth and holds them in place, small spaces can open up between the gum and teeth and your teeth can become loose and may eventually fall out.
Causes of gum disease
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria, which can infect your gums and cause them to become swollen and sore and in the worst case can lead to tooth loss. Research has also shown that gum disease is linked to other serious medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes and arthritis.
